| This Phoenix, known to the Chinese
as Feng Huang, symbolizes virtue, grace and prosperity. The Phoenix represents
the union of opposites, yin and yang, both male and female. |

| Unlike the western phoenix, the Chinese
phoenix is not born again from its ashes. It represents the light of the sun and
of the moon and is the bird of the southern sky. Its song is said to have been
the basis of the five cardinal notes of Chinese melody and one of the four creatures
that created the world (the other three being the dragon, the unicorn and the
tortoise). |
