The Shark

This Emperor series pen is as much about the water as it is about the shark. With wave patterns depicted in hand painted forms, abalone reflective bits and pieces of mother of pearl, this design is a study in flowing composition. The ferocity of the shark is set against undulating light and dark areas.

Unfortunately, we were only able to get one of this series of 88 pieces. We apologize to those of you for whom we could not provide the Shark.

The image of the shark is achieved using the Shishiai - Togidashi (burnished - raised) Maki-e technique. Small pieces of Raden highlight its eyes. The waves surrounding the Shark are created by the Bokashi (shading off) Maki-e technique, where gradations of gold powder are used. Various Raden techniques illustrate the waves and illustrate the movement of the sea.

This piece was created by the master Maki-e artist Masato. Each piece is unique.

The subtle wave patterns of light and dark are set against a spray of abalone above.

The shark's fin emerges from stylized wave forms which drop "spray" of mother of pearl.

The second one we acquired has been SOLD.
