This Maki-e work is done at the Hiratsuka workshop in Japan where the finest quality
work in the world is done. We have made quite a number of pictures to convey this
quality. Notice the range of imagery in this riot of late season foliage. Abalone
fragments are integrated into the design to represent blue star flowers. Seen
in the vertical picture below left, they change color depending on the angle that
they are viewed from. Slightly larger than the Yukari Collection (5 5/8"),
this pen, at nearly 6" long capped, is smaller than the Empreors' 6 13/16".
This is a description of the processes used by Namiki:
"The Fall Flowers design incorporates two different Maki-e techniques, Togadashi-maki-e
(burnished Maki-e) and Taka-mahi-e (raised Maki-e). |
|
|
| |
Togadashi-maki-e is a method in which gilded patterns
are dried, recoated with urushi, and finally burnished to a high sheen, using
charcoal. |
|
This style of Maki-e dates to the 7th century. The Taka-maki-e method is a Maki-e
applied on patterns in raised relief and dates to the 12th century. The spreading
of gold dust on a precise area and to a desired density is a skill which requires
great expertise and experience.

|
Namiki developed the lacquers used in 1925, and has since
earned an international reputation for producing the finest Maki-e decorated fountain
pens available. Each pen is signed by the artist in gold.
The red calligraphic mark is that of the Hiratuska works. |
