The sharp shapes of the bat, with pointed wings, contrast beautifully with the round shapes of the moon and clouds.
Striking and understated, the bat motif on this pen will become more prominent as the kuro-tamenuri finish matures. As the surface wears, the undercoating will shine through.
This pen has the larger diameter measuring .67 inches compared to the regular version measuring .59 inches.
The above photo, taken from Nakaya's archives, vividly illustrates the maturation of urushi finish over time. The darker pen at top is a recently completed pen, while the lighter pen at bottom shows the process of brightening that occurs over a period of months and years.
Note also the subtle differences in hue between the just-completed pen in the above photo and that of the different just-completed pen pictured at the very top of the page...these subtle nuances of shading are a product of the artisanal, hand-crafted nature of the Nakaya production process, in which no two pens are ever exactly alike.
Much maligned in historic times, the place of the bat has gained importance in our ecosystem as we realize that it eats its weight in mosquitoes and other insects each night.
