Portable Fountain Pen
Shu (Unpolished Red)

The matte surface on the Shu (red) fountain pen reveals an entirely different color than the polished version. This one takes on a soft sheen revealed in the reflections below. It is also soft to the touch.
If simplicity is the highest form of elegance, this is it. Nakaya pens achieve greatness by virtue of its streamlined design, excellent materials, flawless surface and saturated colors. Shown here is the Portable size (smaller) Writer (with clip) fountain pen in Shu (unpolished red).

This Nakaya fountain pen is made of hard rubber or ebonite that is meticulously coated with Urushi, a material made from the sap of a Japanese lacquer tree. . The process of collecting the Urushi and applying many layers of lacquer to this fountain pen takes three months to complete.
This finish reveals a level of craftsmanship and attention that we have only seen in the finest pens. Notice how the red color varies as it rounds the edge of the cap and barrel below.
We saw the hard rubber pens being cut in the Nakaya Tokyo plant. They are cut on a foot treadle hand lathe by a very senior craftsman. He uses hand tools to cut the basic shapes of the pens as well as to finish the connecting screws between the cap and the barrel.

Notice the simplicity of the clip attachment to the cap. The clip is securely captured by a stainless screw that penetrates a hole in the clip and engages the top blind cap. The clip is perfectly fitted so that it will not rotate around the barrel. A hard rubber to hard rubber connection assures the seal at this joint.

This pen will only grow more beautiful with time.
