Piccolo Writer (With Clip)
Kuro-tamenuri (Black-Red)
What is it about the very best pens? They have the attribute of simultaneously drawing you to both look at and hold them. Nakaya has somehow managed to bring magic into their pens, but in a unique, yet traditionally Japanese way, it's the opposite of sleight-of-hand. These are pens that look great and do not disappoint your expectation of simple elegance once you uncap the Piccolo and begin to write.
The Piccolo is a large pen, yet striking for its lightness as well as its play on light-- the Urushi lacquer technique makes a puzzle of red and black... is it dark red, or red-black or blackish-red? As the hand holds these Urushi pens, over time the underlayment color begins to show through, making the Piccolo a true, one of a kind pen in which you, the owner, literally put your own hand-print on the pen.

This Piccolo is a clipped pen, and though it is large, most shirt pockets will easily accommodate it. The Piccolo has a stout, Parker-style clip attachment that won't fall from the pocket, even in the most strenuous yoga postures -- yes you will want to wear the Piccolo everywhere! Weighing only 22.5 grams, this pen is 5 9/16" capped. The Piccolo could be capped, but be aware that as a habit posting it will eventually create a wear ring on the tail of the pen.

Adding to the aura of mystery, the process of collecting the Urushi (sap) and applying many layers of lacquer to this fountain pen takes three months to complete.

The Piccolo uses either cartridges or a dedicated converter. Either a Platinum or Nakaya converter will fit this pen. If you prefer a Platinum (brand, not material) converter to fill this pen with ink, we have either the simple form (no additional cost) or the painted "goldfish" design for an additional $25.
These close-ups give a sense of the subtle color shift that occurs on a new pen. But they don't do justice to the feeling of surprise-- how light the pen is, how elegant, how "right" the pen feels in hand, with its softly rounded, slightly voluptuous design.
