Nakaya Neo Standard Maki-e Sumiko
Ascending Dragon Fountain Pen
| One of the most subtle and beautiful forms of Japanese Urushi techniques is the Sumi or Sumiko. Black carbon ink is layered on the surface of the pen to create a textured motif surface. |
| Revealed here is the traditional Ascending Dragon motif, a theme with an extraordinarily rich and complex history in Asian art and literature. |
Notice the flaming pearl symbol on the gripping section. Because of its soft matte texture, this pen has a special feel between the fingers. It is easy to hold even with the lightest grip.
This is traditional by-hand craftsmanship at its highest. Notice the minute attention to detail, as is the clawed foot on the left and the pearl to the right. |
| Stylized smoke shapes fill the space between the figures - perhaps a sly allusion to the charcoal or ash traditionally utilized in Sumiko technique. |
| The ruthenium clip and ruthenium-plated 14K solid gold nib add a smoky richness which balances the deeper shades of this pen. |
The Maki-e painted converters are available for an additional $21.

Nakaya nib, imprinted Nakata, the family name of the manufacturer, is made of solid
14K gold.
