Nakaya Mini Decapod Fountain Pen
Heki-tamenuri (Brown-Green)

This the Mini Decapod is a newer and shorter version of the full-size Decapod that we have come to know and love. The Mini is an answer to those who find the full-size pen too long for their pockets, yet want a pen that is long enough to fit the hand. (The tail of this pen comes above the web between the thumb and finger of a big fisted guy.)

Heki-tamenuri refers to the color of this pen. The Decapod is the shape. This name means ten feet or ten facets. The "Writer" model includes a clip. (The "Cigar" model comes without a clip.)

The facets of this fountain pen follow from end to end in a long smooth curve. It is a shape that can be described by pure geometry except that it is subtly more complex. In the end it is the eye that this shape most satisfies.
The ten sided shape has another function. Because it is not round in cross section it is not likely to roll off a desk. The yellow pencil evolved from a cylinder shape to be a faceted. The Decapod gives facets an entire new meaning.
The closed length of this pen is just over five inches, the barrel, not including the nib and feed is about 3 3/4". It has the same long gripping section as the full size pen. See out Pen Measurements page for more comparisons.
This urushi application appears to glow from within. The darker outer color "pulls back" from edges leaving an impression of inner light. This occurs on every edge of this pen, so the faceted models exhibit many opportunities for this effect. The urushi lacquer acts something like a ceramic glaze, emphasizing the form.
Notice how the ends of this pen are beveled to finish the facets. Not only does this trim the cap and barrel end it provides a rounder edge, more likely to wear evenly.
