Long Fountain
Pen
Heki-tamenuri (Brown-Green)
|
If simplicity is the highest
form of elegance, this is it. As unadorned as this pen is, it
achieves greatness by virtue of its materials, surface and color.
Shown here is the Long Cigar (No Clip) fountain pen in Heki-tamenuri
(Brown-Green). |

The Urushi tradition is historic
and profound in Japan, where lacquer ware has adorned utilitarian
objects for centuries. This technique, though painstaking, gives
this fountain pens its deep lustrous sheen and subtle color
shift. |
 |
This is not a pen that you would carry in your pocket. Besides
being clipless, at six and a half inches long, it would extend
above the lip of most pockets. This pen is 6 1/2" capped.
It weighs 24.5 grams.
This Nakaya fountain pen is made of hard rubber or ebonite
that is meticulously coated with Urushi, a material made from
the sap of a Japanese lacquer tree. The process of collecting
the Urushi and applying many layers of lacquer to this fountain
pen takes three months to complete.

| These close-ups give a sense of the subtle color
shift that occurs on a new pen. As the pen ages with careful handling,
more of green undercolor emerges. |
