Nakaya Long Cigar Ascending Dragon

Aka-Tamenuri
Nakaya Long Cigar Ascending Dragon
At first glance this pen my appear to be another Long Aka-tamenuri, (the reddish red) but after close examination the image of a golden dragon can be seen through the deep layers of Urushi.
Nakaya Long Cigar Ascending Dragon
This pen is made using the Tame-Sukashi technique, which obscures an under-painting with a urushi lacquer. In time the under-image emerges stronger. In time the dragon painting will be much more prominent.

The fascinating feature of this pen is that the image literally "ascends" with use as the image of the dragon comes up as the pen is handled. In this slow process the owner's hand and everyday wear will give this pen the beauty of age.

The image below, taken from end of the barrel nearest the section, shows the under-painting of the pearl and gold laden urushi lacquer as it sets into the threads.

Notice how the flaming pearl on the gripping section, above right, is now obscured by dark urushi lacquer.
