Nakaya Long Araishu
(orange)
Orange has a long and interesting history
in the world of pens. First seen on Waterman's hard rubber pens
in around 1910, it became a famous color in the Parker Big Red,
a ground breaking pen of the 1920's. (The Big Red is actually
an orange color similar to the bottom pen in this picture.)
If simplicity is the highest form of elegance,
this is it. Nakaya pens achieve greatness by virtue of its streamlined
design, excellent materials, flawless surface and saturated
colors. Shown here is the Long size (largest) Cigar (without
clip) fountain pen in Araishu. Araishu in Japanese translates
from "shu" for red and "arai" for laundry.
The meaning of the combined word suggests a red that has been
washed to the extent that it is no longer red. It is now an
pale red. The acceptance of a quality that comes with time is
a hallmark of Japanese language. In this case when we embrace
the passage of time and we have araishu. The difference is clear
when comparing with polished Shu at the top and the unpolished
Shu in the middle.
The extra long gripping section on the
"Long" pen is very comfortable in the fingers. The
long size balances in hand without posting the cap on the back
of the barrel.
The Nakaya nib, imprinted Nakata, the
family name of the manufacturer is made of solid 14K
gold, our favorite alloy for pen nibs..
Each of these nibs is suitable for
our customization to extra flexible (an additional $65
charge). The medium, broad and extra broad tip can be
customized into a cursive italic, stub or oblique point
(an additional $55 for these customizations).
