Minimalist sculpture? No, this is a functional fountain pen. Nakaya has created a new shape similar to the Piccolo model in its most basic form. When we first saw this pen, we realized that Nakaya had created a beautiful and very practical form. There is something deeply appealing about the textured edge on the cap of this pen. The cone ends of the cap and barrel are very similar to the Piccolo model (see below in black). This pen does not come with a clip.

| Notice how the above photo has the "fins" on both the cap and barrel. Please specify which version you would like. |
 |
| The Ishime kanshitsu in green Midori color enhances the textural effect of this pen. |

 |
| A number of our customers have requested a bigger Piccolo model from Nakaya. This pen is that and more. At exactly 6 inches long capped and 5.6 uncapped, this is a full size pen. The barrel and cap diameter, not including the fin, is .68 inches. Although large in diameter, this pen does not feel heavy (34g. with converter inside). With a long section, the balance is perfect. |
 |
The Dorsal Fins are also available with a rollerball section as seen above and below. Nakaya now offers both gel point (roller ball) and ball point in all of its long and portable pens. The price is $50 less than the model with a standard single-tone nib. |
 |
| The barrel and cap begin life as round rod stock. However, Urushi craftsmen, using Kanshitsu powder (silver), built up a ridge on the surface of the hard rubber cap where a clip might be. This edge prevents the pen from rolling off of your desk. Or as Mark Twain said of the Conklin Crescent filler, "This fountain pen is a curse stopper." |
 |
| The surface has been built up in layers of black Urushi, coated with Midori (dark green) resin, and then polished back to reveal the black under-coat in tiny areas. Note the solid Midori barrel threads and section above. |

The picture above shows the "fin" of the cap next to the closed joint between the cap and barrel.
The Kanji to the left are the initials, "Patience, Love, Discipline." This particular Dorsal Fin with Kanji was created for a customer. Notice how the Ishime Kanshitsu has been 'lifted' for a better surface area to paint the details of the Kanji.
Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available - click here for details. |

The picture to the left shows the top of the cap placed next to the Nakata nib. Note the "Dorsal Fin" on the up side of the cap.
This is one of the most beautiful and unusual fountain pens Nakaya has produced. While usually requiring a special order, we may occasionally have Dorsal Fins in stock and available for immediate purchase--check our Nakaya Availability page for more details. |

We can provide any of Nakaya's superb nibs. The the above left is a medium tip.
