Maki-e Sumi Decapod Gold Fountain Pen
The Maki-e Sumi with gold trim and accents is a study in minimalism. The gentle matte black surface of Sumi-ko, black ink lacpuer, with one point 'gold' trim gives this Decapod its lustre. The Decapod name means ten feet or ten facets. The "Writer" model includes a clip. This model, the "Cigar" model, designates without a clip. Shown here is the Cigar model. Nakaya creates this pen using the Sumiko technique.
The facets of this fountain pen follow from end to end in a long smooth curve. It is a shape that can be described by pure geometry except that it is subtly more complex. It is a shape satisfies the eye and is a delight to hold.
The ten sided shape has another function. Because it is not round in cross section it is not likely to roll off of a desk. The yellow pencil evolved from a cylinder shape to be a faceted for this same reason. The Decapod gives facets an entire new meaning. At 5 7/8" capped and weighing 18.5 grams dry this pen is beautifully balanced.
A gold taka-makie has been done between the cap and the barrel

Notice how the ends of this pen are beveled to finish the facets. Not only does this trim the cap and barrel end it provides a rounder edge, more likely to wear evenly.

We provide a Platinum converter used to fill this pen with ink in either the simple form or the painted "goldfish" design for an additional $25.
