Decapod Fountain Pen
Kuro-tamenuri (Black / Dark Red)
The "Writer" designation means this pen has a clip. (The "Cigar" model is without clip.) The Kuro-tamenuri describes the "black red dark" which is deeper in value than the Aka-tamenuri, reddish red dark". Shown here is the Decapod Writer (With Clip) fountain pen in Kuro-tamenuri (Black/Dark Red).
The facets of this fountain pen follow from end to end in a long smooth curve. It is a shape that can be described by pure geometry except that it is subtly more complex. In the end it is the eye that this shape most satisfies.
The Decapod Cigar (No Clip) fountain pen is also available in Kuro-tamenuri (Black/Dark Red) as seen above.

The ten sided shape has another function. Because it is not round in cross section it is not likely to roll off a desk. The yellow pencil evolved from a cylinder shape to be a faceted. The Decapod gives facets an entire new meaning. This profoundly deep red "breaks" at every edge, revealing the elegant form of this Nakaya fountain pen. At 5 7/8" capped and weighing 21.5 grams dry this pen is a pleasure to hold.

Although entirely hand made, these pens show a precision of craftsmanship rarely seen. You will notice that the facets line up between the cap and barrel in a precise manner when the cap is started in every other barrel thread.
Notice that the clip is attached to the cap by an end cap of the same urushi material. The pocket clip makes this pen easy to carry in the shirt, but of course takes away from the simplicity of the design. The presence of the clip is a case of function over aesthetics.

The Maki-e painted converters are available for an additional $21.
