Decapod Fountain Pen Araishu (Orange)

Araishu refers to the color of this pen and means Arai "wash, as in laundry, faded" Shu "red". Therefore, washed out red equals orange. Because these pens are hand made he color may vary slightly from pen to pen.
The word Decapod refers to the shape. This name means ten feet or ten facets. "Writer" denotes a pen with a clip. Shown here is the Decapod Cigar (No Clip - above)and Writer (With Clip - below) fountain pen in Araishu (Orange/Red).
The facets of this fountain pen follow from end to end in a long smooth curve. It is a shape that can be described by pure geometry except that it is subtly more complex. In the end it is the eye that this shape most satisfies.
The ten sided shape has another function. Just like a yellow pencil which evolved from a cylinder to a faceted shape, the Decapod is not likely to roll off a desk. At 5 7/8" capped and weighing 18.5 grams dry weight this pen is a pleasure to hold. It is light, strong and balanced.

This urushi application has a depth, showing darker at the edges. The orange color glows between the darker edges of the facets leaving an impression of richness. These "lines" occur on every edge of this pen. The urushi lacquer acts something like a ceramic glaze, emphasizing the form.

The Maki-e painted converters are available for an additional $21.
