Matte Briarwood Deep |
The first Briarwood that Nakaya produced
was this model in a Matte Deep color. Many
will recognize this wood as the material of quality smoking
pipes (from back when they were in common use). This material
also reminds us of the dashboard of a vintage Jaguar.
|
 |
| With a "wasp waist" grip and no barrel threads, this original Nakaya design is easy to hold between the fingers. The solid 14K gold nib and gold plated trim complement the rich briarwood. |
 |
| The richness of this color comes from the natural grain of this dense, durable and highly fire- resistant wood (not that any one makes a practice of lighting their pen). |
 |
As with many objects made to last a very long time, this wood material will only grow richer with use. |

| Offered in a lighter color, this matte surface briarwood fountain pen shows a contrast between the ochre colored grain and the natural red of the briarwood. |
 |
| Notice in the two pictures above that the grain runs through the pen showing some parts lighter and some darker. These pictures were taken of the same pen. |
 |
| Each of these pens has its own material signature. |

Gloss Briarwood Deep |
 |
This is the second generation finish from Nakaya on a briarwood pen. The glossy surface is the result of layers of clear urushi lacquers applied over briarwood. This adds to the cost of this pen beyond those seen above. Nakaya considers this finish the "bijou of wood." |

Gloss Briarwood Deep Color $500.00 (Pictured here.)

The Nakaya nib, imprinted Nakata, the family name of the manufacturer, is
made of solid 14K gold. Each of these nibs is suitable for our customization
to extra flexible. The medium and broad tip can be customized by us into cursive
italic, stub, or oblique points. |

Gloss Briarwood Light |
 |
| The lighter color briarwood allows more of the grain to show through the lacquer gloss surface. |
 |
 |
The many layers of lacquer provide a tough durable surface to the briarwood underneath. The finishing time for these fountain pens increases the cost over the matte surface pens.

Seen here with the double broad single-tone 14K nib, this pen is also available in the full range of tipping sizes.

Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of Nakaya. All Nakaya pens come packaged in handcrafted finery, as painstakingly constructed as the pens they protect. The heavy decorative rice paper, simple solid softwood
shipping box, and fabric pouch make a lovely presentation for these Nakaya Urushi pens. |
