Nakaya Blue Rose With Raden Fountain Pen |
|
| This very simple design employs tiny pieces of raden (blue abalone shell) to depict the petals of the rose. Small green pieces of raden are also used to represent leaves. A scattering of petals and leaves seem to fall from the rose down around the barrel, demonstrating the fleeting nature of this bloom. |
 |
| This fountain pen is 2mm larger in diameter than the standard Nakaya Portable pen. This larger "canvas" gives more room for the artist to develop the motif. |
Tiny shaped pieces of blue and green raden can be seen inlaid in the Heki-tamenuri lacquer seen to the left. No image can capture the delicacy and spatial composition of this subtle design.
This pen comes from a famous Urushi lacquer works in Wajima, on the West Coast of Japan. |
