Fountain pens are made to be used with light
pressure. They rely on contact only with the paper, which causes the ink to flow.
Fountain pens require nothing but light touch. A heavy hand on a delicate nib
can cause damage, bending tines and greatly affecting performance.
Avoid
abrasive surfaces for writing and for sanding the nib. Because a nib is a tiny
metal surface, even the smallest abrasive grade of sand paper, commonly sold,
will prove too coarse and damage it. Also, avoid scratching the top surface of
a nib, especially those that are plated with platinum or rhodium, as it is easy
to wear this plating away. When blotting the nib and feed after filling from a
bottle, remember to use only a soft tissue; fibers in paper towels are actually
capable of scratching the delicate surface of a nib.
