Q: What type of ink is the best?

Actually, that is not our forte but we do offer comments based on our experience and a Website that offers more precise information.

The topic of ink requires a bit of consideration by the user. There are ten major brands of ink and each may have 5-50 different colors and thus 50 different chemistries based on the compounds within the ink itself.

"Some chemicals act differently in terms of wetness, thickness, penetration, paper,"John says. "Some may react with each other when mixed. I have seeen ink turn into strands or liquid with precipitate."

You can see on the left that some inks are even capable of eating away at the rhodium plating on a solid gold nib.

Note too that permanent ink suggests a strict set of maintenance rules; the ink can all but permanently damage the pen if you forget to rinse it on a regular basis. You'll need to flush the nib section and feed regularly when you use permanent ink; otherwise the ink will dry to a hard non-water soluble material and stick to the mechanisms, permanently.

We like Pelican ink. Still, we recommend going to www.inksampler.com, where you will find a detailed analysis of a range of inks.
