Q: What should I expect from a fountain pen versus other
pens I find in an arts supply stores?
Artists usually want to
know how to get line width variation. They want a consistent line, an expressive
line. They usually are experienced with contemporary speed ball or a dip pens
so must exercise patience when moving into fountain pens. Although this is partly
made up for by a constant supply of ink.
An artist will have to get used
to a nib and will likely appreciate something with a bit of flexibility. The flexibility
gives them a chance to be present in the line. It will really have to do with
how they sense the pen tip as they apply pressure.
Artists usually like
either a flexible point or an italic pointed pen. The combination of these two
line varying characteristics will make an even more expressive line, but can be
a challenge to use.
With practice, taking time to get the feel of a nib,
an artist will have much more control over the type of line they produce.
