When the Bamboo Wind arrived, we here at Classic Fountain Pens promptly dropped whatever we were doing at the time to inspect. What we found was a black raised bamboo motif that quickly warmed to the touch. We also found the calligraphy of perfectly crafted Kanji letters, with the Urushi artist’s name and the edition number placed near the bottom of the barrel.

We were impressed when we slowly unscrewed the cap to find that the section was also handmade, displaying more of the bamboo motif that not only looked the part, but also provided a textured grip under the fingers.

We found ourselves rotating and gazing over its design again and again, and once it found its way into the hand, it was difficult to put it down.

"The bamboo that bends is stronger than the oak that resists" Bamboo is an emblem of refined practicality, strength and flexibility, simplicity, endurance and beauty in Japanese culture. Even in a hurricane it will bend and not break.

The finish over the hard rubber on the Bamboo Wind changes as the pen is handled. A sheen develops on the high points, lifting the embossed effect and making the stalks and leaves more pronounced. We think this surface will improve with use as it becomes glossier on the high points and shows greater contrast in the motif.

The hand painted characters are for the title of the pen, Bamboo Wind, the Limited Edition number ( in this case AP), and on the bottom, the artist's signature.

Of the seven " long cigar" model fountain pens that have been shipped to date, not including this Artist's Proof, we currently have only a few pens available. The Nakaya nib, imprinted Nakata, the family name of the manufacturer is made of solid 14K gold. Each of these nibs is suitable for our customization to extra flexible. The medium, broad and double broad tip can be customized by us into cursive italic, stub or oblique points.
