Bexley
Submariner Grande CollectionButterscotch
Mmmmm.... Butterscotch. This color has a
recent history in the pen world. OMAS released a color called
Colonial Brown in 2001 when they were doing individual Colors
of the Year. (I always loved the sophistication of this hard
to pin down color.) A problem occurred with the OMAS Paragon
Colonial Brown though: the rose gold trim discolored. For that
reason, the company recalled the entire run, at least those
pens that had not been sold, and destroyed them in Bologna,
Italy. Jack Leone, one of Bexley's designers and color specialist,
recognized the qualities of this color. He chose this Butterscotch
color as a direct match of that Colonial Brown.
At just under 5 3/4" long, capped, and
weighing 20 grams, this streamline shaped pen exhibits great
forward balance when the cap is posted. Although we do not recommend
posting the cap on any fountain pen, we are willing to make
an exception with this one. The cap band will prevent even the
possibility of cracking the cap lip. Because the barrel is so
tapered, the cap fits well down over it, shortening the length
of the posted pen to a graceful, easy to fit in the hand length
of 6 3/8".
The rollerball clip, popular on many of the OMAS pens dating back to the early 1930's, was originally designed and manufactured
by the Boston Safety Pen Company (BSPC). In 1917 Wahl Pen Company purchased BSPC
and the rights to the rollerball clip patent. Wahl-Eversharp made extensive use
of this clip throughout the 20's and 30's. We believe that the rollerball clip
keeps coming back because of its splendid utility. While it holds the pen firmly
in the pocket, it slides easily on and off.
All the Bexley
Submariner pens come with an 18k two-tone nib, hand set by Howard Levy and cartridge/converter
filling system. They are available in Fine, Medium, Broad and Broad Stub. The
Stub nib is suitable for customization to all forms of italic points up to 1.15
mm.
We like the gold
section and trim as the best combination with this color pen.
